MELANIE CERVANTES
UCSB Library’s California Ethnic & Multicultural Archives (CEMA), Las Maestras Center for Xicana[X] Indigenous Thought, Art and Social Praxis; and the Mellichamp Chair for Racial Environmental Justice Fund are pleased to announce the Artist in Residence: Melanie Cervantes. This collaboration includes the Art Department and Santa Barbara Public Library and will bring the artist and cultural worker, Melanie Cervantes to UCSB from May 3-5 for a series of workshops and public lectures.
CEMA Visiting Artist Lecture at UCSB Library
Join us for a public lecture by Melanie Cervantes, artist and cultural worker. Cervantes will discuss her work as a visual artist, inspired by the people around her and her communities’ desire for radical social transformation. CEMA holds the Dignidad Rebelde Graphic Art Collection, which includes eighty-eight social justice-themed prints and posters produced by the collective from 2002-2024.

Melanie Cervantes (Chicanx) is a visual artist and co-founder of the graphic arts collaboration Dignidad Rebelde. Her work created a visual lexicon of resistance, inspired by movements for radical social transformation and indigenous sovereignty. She has exhibited globally at institutions including SFMOMA, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Museo Franz Mayer. Her art is held in permanent collections at the Library of Congress, Stanford, Dartmouth Collection and CEMA within UCSB Library’s Special Research Collections.
