¡Honoring Home as Praxis! Día de Muertos Vigil
animArte Programming
Co-Sponsored by California Arts Council and California Ethnic and Multicultural Archives // UCSB Special Collections at Davidson’s Library

Día de Muertos - ¡Honoring Home As Praxis! This year’s Día de Muertos community altar was initially conceived by Maestra Celia in collaboration with UCSB California Ethnic & Multicultural Archives (CEMA) exhibition of Self Help Graphic prints, entitled “La Cultura Cura.”Building the altar in the Ethnic Studies Library served as a reminder of the original intention of Movimiento-era artists and cultural workers who first brought Día de Muertos to Latinx communities some fifty years ago. It was a way to provide a home-ground—a tactile connection to the spirits, ancestors, and relatives of this continent and its history. To this day, the practice of making the altáres provides an opportunity to heal the disconnections that colonial removal, forced migrations, and separation of our families have inflicted on our bodies and consciousness.
